Art

At Sutton-at-Hone School we aim to offer a high-quality art and design education which will engage, inspire and challenge all pupils. Art is carefully planned through the creative curriculum throughout the school. We equip our pupils with the knowledge and skills they need to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design.

As well as being part of the curriculum we have an extended art project each year which allows children and staff to focus on this area of the curriculum intensely. Children are encouraged to work both alone and in partnership with other children to produce both individual pieces and joint projects. Examples of children’s painting and artwork can be seen displayed around the school.

Throughout the years we introduce the children to a variety of techniques including painting, drawing, sculpture and print-making and at the same time improve manipulative skills and foster creativity. Children learn about a range of artists, craft makers and designers, making links to their own work.

We hope that through this they will be inspired to create and become the next generation of fashion designers, animators, interior designers and much more. Remember us when you are famous!

What can you do at home

Encourage your children to look for and talk about colours, textures and patterns in their everyday world. Discuss when looking at pictures how the art makes your child feel.

There are many Galleries close to home to inspire your young artist so if you are at a loss for something to do on the holidays or at the weekend why not visit: ‘What if gallery’ Dartford – Hosting pieces from local artists or Hobbycraft Crayford- which runs sessions on school holidays for children.

There are also some wonderful family art sessions a little further afield at the ‘Royal Academy of Arts’ and ‘The National Gallery’ (both in London) which run over the summer holidays.

Most of all have fun with it as overall we want our children to love being able to express themselves through the medium of art.
