Design and Technology

Design and Technology at Sutton-at-Hone is an inspiring, practical subject for all of our pupils. Using creativity and imagination, pupils design, make and evaluate products that often solve problems whilst and bringing together many other subject areas, such as: art, computing, maths and science.

The national curriculum for design and technology aims to ensure that all pupils:

* develop the creative, technical and practical expertise needed to perform everyday tasks confidently and to participate successfully in an increasingly technological world

* build and apply a repertoire of knowledge, understanding and skills in order to design and make high-quality prototypes and products for a wide range of users

* critique, evaluate and test their ideas and products and the work of others

* understand and apply the principles of nutrition and learn how to cook.

At Sutton-at-Hone we provide many learning opportunities within this subject as each year group creates products to accompany their topics, and the children are encouraged to utilise and build on previous skills as they progress through the school. Using our school forest, Forest School sessions and the afterschool club, allow our pupils to build dens, amongst many other things.

This is a fantastic subject to get all the family involved with at home. When your child(ren) receive their homework tasks, why not try collaborating on the practical ones and build a model or create a moving picture, for example.

In the South-East there are many engineering feats and interesting places to visit where Design and Technology are evident. You could enjoy a day out at:

Chatham Historic Dockyards, Chatham

Kent and East Sussex Railway, Tenterden

Kent Life, Maidstone

Maidstone Museum, Maidstone

The Science Museum, London

There are a magnitude of jobs for Design and Technology implementation. For example: carpenter, aerospace engineer, architect, builder, computer technician, electrician, gardener, plumber, teacher, telecommunications officer, tree surgeon and window fitter to name just some.
